The Josh Fryday for Lieutenant Governor campaign today began the first installment of a seven-figure television and digital media advertising campaign. The ad, titled “Guts,” is narrated by Emmy-Award winning actor Peter Coyote, and features an endorsement from Governor Gavin Newsom.

The ad begins, “The former Navy Lieutenant for Lieutenant Governor. When our government betrayed the Constitution, only Fryday had the guts to fight back.”
The ad features archival footage of Josh Fryday, a Navy JAG veteran who worked on the Military Commissions in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba and testified before the U.S. Senate standing up for the rule of law, available to watch in full here.

Background:
Fryday is a father to three, husband to a public school teacher, Navy veteran, former mayor and member of the Governor’s cabinet. As California’s Chief Service Officer, Fryday has grown the California Service Corps to be larger than the entire Peace Corps. He also led California’s COVID-19 Task Force to support food insecure communities and food banks across the state.
Previously, Fryday served as President of Golden State Opportunity helping expand the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC), and as Chief Operating Officer of NextGen Climate, a leading national organization focused on fighting climate change. He also served as Mayor and on the City Council in his hometown of Novato. From 2009 to 2013, Josh served as an Officer in the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG). He worked on the Military Commissions in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba and testified before the U.S. Senate standing up for the rule of law. He also served in Japan, where he assisted the Navy’s 7th Fleet’s Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief efforts during Operation Tomodachi following the 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and Fukushima nuclear disaster.
